A Liberation Tigers cadre was killed when the Tigers launched a counter attack on a Deep Penetrating group of armed operatives who had moved 5 km into LTTE controlled Vaharai area Sunday at 4:50 a.m., Batticaloa Commanding Office spokesman of the LTTE, S. Theeralan, told media. The paramilitary group retreated with the dead and wounded, leaving behind a GPS device, communications equipments and explosives. The group used civilian captives in the village as human-shield to withdraw from the site, Theeran told media Sunday morning.
The dead LTTE cadre, Kathirgamathamby Selvan alias Parthipan, was from Piyavedduvan in Valaichenai, Theeralan said. The group that retreated Sunday consisted of paramilitary cadres and Sri Lankan Military Intelligence operatives, he said. He further said that the deep penetration groups were being operated from the Singapura and Mankerny bases of the Sri Lanka Army. Kunjikulam is an interiror village located near Kirimichchai in Vaharai, 64 km north of Batticaloa town. The LTTE spokesman also confirmed that an LTTE cadre had died last week in a clash with another deep penetration group of armed operatives in the area.
