Thampalakamam women receive self-employment training

Thirty-five rural girls and housewives who underwent six month training in sewing in the traditional Tamil village, Thampalakamam , under the auspices of Trincomalee Rehabilitation Organization (TRO) were awarded with certificates at an event held in the Thampalakamam divisional office of the TRO Monday evening. Thampalakamam is located about 24 km, southwest of Trincomalee town along Trincomalee-Kandy highway.

An exhibition of dresses made by the trainees during the training period was also held on the same day. Mr.K.Thurairatnasingham, Trincomalee district parliamentarian was the chief guest. Mr.N.Singarayaer, Thampalakamam Divisional Secretary, Mr.S.Vijekumar, TRO Trincomalee District Director, Mr.C.Kumarakuruparan, Deputy Director, Mr.A.H.Sahul Hameed, Member of the Board of Directors of the TRO, Mr.V.Kalaivarnan, Project Officer and Mr.S. Thiruchelvam, President of the Potkerny Rural Development Society were the other guests. Mr.Nallasivam, TRO Thampalakamam co-ordinator presided the event. Mr.K.Thurairatnasingham, Trincomalee district parliamentarian was the chief guest. Majority of the beneficiaries were affected by the two decade old war and violence, sources said. Ms. Thavamani Karunakaran conducted the training course. TRO Thampalakamam division office has trained three batches of girls and housewives in sewing since the year 2003, sources said. Beneficiaries of the training course made an appeal at the event to supply sewing machines to enabling them to start self-generating income projects.
