SLMM head arrives in Trincomalee

Mr.Hagrup Haukland, Head of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) arrived
in Trincomalee Wednesday by air on a two day stay in the east port town to
hold discussions with the local heads of Sri Lanka Army, Sri Lanka Navy,
Sri Lanka Police and LTTE district political head on the tense situation in
Muttur following a spate of violent incidents in which several Tamil and
Muslim civilians were killed, SLMM sources said.
Mr.Haukland held Wednesday morning held discussion with Mr.Rohan
Abeyawardene, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) eastern region at
the latter's office which is located in Orr's Hill, a suburb in the
Trincomalee town, sources said. Mr.Haukland and monitors of the SLMM based in east port town by afternoon
left to Muttur by a gunboat of the Sri Lanka Navy to meet Mr.Elilan,
Trincomalee district political head of the LTTE. From there he was taken by
SLMM vehicle to LTTE district political secretariat, which is located in
the Muttur east, sources said. Mr.Haukland is scheduled to meet Major General Sumith Balasuriya, General
Officer Commander of the Sri Lanka Army in Trincomalee and Rear Admiral
Siriwardene, Commander of the Navy eastern region on Thursday, SLMM sources
said.
