Film, book released to mark tsunami anniversary

North East Provincial Education and Cultural Ministry released a short film "Thuduppu" (Oar) and a compilation of selected paintings of students in the province to mark the first year anniversary of the tsunami. Mr. R. Thiagalingam, Provincial Education Ministry handed over the first copy of the book to Mr.S.Amirthalingam, Secretary to the Provincial Governor, and lawyer and film critic Mr.K.Sivapalan handed over a copy of the film to the chief guest at an event held at Trincomalee Sri Koneswara Hindu College Monday evening, sources said.

The sixteen-minute short film "Thuduppu" depicts the story of a young woman who lost her husband in tsunami. The film was produced by the Provincial Ministry and directed by Mullai Jesuthasan from Vanni. The artistes were also from Vanni, sources said. Provincial Education Ministry conducted a painting competition among students in the province to register their traumatic experiences after the tsunami and also to encourage their creative talents. Of the several hundred paintings submitted students, education authorities selected about one hundred and released them under the caption "Drawing by the tender minds and tidal waves."
