Munasinghe makes Major General

Brig. Munasinghe of the Sri Lankan Army has been promoted to a rank of Major General said sources. Brig. Munasinghe has been the official SLA spokesman for several years.

His promotion has taken longer than other Brigadiers, according to SLA sources. This may have been due to the fact he had not held a major operational command in a combat area, said the sources.

Brig. Munasinghe was given a senior operational command in the Eastern Province, but was reassigned to military information duties in Colombo after a relatively short period.

His period of command coincided with a sharp increase in LTTE activity in the east, during which the Tigers overran several SLA posts and camps, and took control of large areas of territory.
