Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) appealed to non-governmental organizations working in the Batticaloa district to expedite their tsunami rehabilitation and reconstruction work as large number of affected families are living temporary structures fourteen months after the disaster. Mr.S.Elilan, Trincomalee district political head of the LTTE made this appeal at a conference held Friday in the office of the Vakarai Divisional Secretary attended by NGOs' representatives, sources said
Mr.K.Uthayakumar, Vakarai Divisional Secretary and Mr.Theepan, Vakarai division political head of the LTTE also attended the conference, sources said. Several tsunami-affected persons have not resumed their farming and other livelihood activities, as they are not provided with necessary assistance, Mr.Elilan pointed out. He added he has noted that assistance channeled by these NGOs has reached only selected and not all affected by tsunami. All affected should be treated alike. No delay should be seen in supplying the needs of the affected due to the change of government in the centre. Normalcy cannot be restored in the lives of affected people by providing them with permanent houses. Beneficiaries should be provided with better health services, transport facilities, education, drinking water and electricity in their areas, Mr.Elilan said.
