Blast destroys electricity cable towers

High voltage electricity cable towers which supply electricity to Mannar town and Pesali were destroyed in a bomb explosion Sunday night shortly after midnight, resulting in disruption of electricity supplies to those areas, said sources there.

Ceylon Electricity board officials estimated the damage to be nearly Rs 350,000 ( Approx. 5600 US$).

The authorities had earlier said that electricity would be supplied to areas controlled by the Sri Lankan Government and by the Liberation Tigers.

However, Madhu church area, which is not controlled by the Sri Lankan Government has not been supplied electricity, which might have prompted the explosion, said sources.

The Sri Lankan Police have blamed the Tigers for the explosion.
