EPDP leader taken abroad

The leader of the Eelam People's Democratic Party (EPDP), Mr. Douglas Devananda, who was critically wounded when he was attacked by the detainees at the Kalutara prison two weeks ago, has been flown to a foreign country for further treatment said ex-militant sources in Colombo.

However, they said that they could not reveal which country Mr. Devananda has been taken to, due to security considerations.

Two doctors and an EPDP Parliamentarian accompanied Mr. Devananda, they said.

Mr. Devanda was attacked when he visited the prison to see some of the deatinees who had given up a fast unto death over their prolonged detention without trial. He was speaking to the protestors when he was set upon by several attackers, said sources.

According to Sri Lankan State press, his condition has improved recently.
