"In relation to past results, we have won more seats in the local authority polls," said Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), the Marxist Sinhala national party's political wing in a press release issued in Colombo. "Number of our members in the Tisamaharagama pradeshya sabah has increased and this reflects the excellent work we have with our people in that area," the release added.
"Besides, in the rest of the local authority bodies in the country, the number of our members has increased, and this is 11.9% of the total number of the entire votes polled," the press release said. "In five local authority bodies we have defeated the United National Party (UNP) and have become the opposition in all the five local bodies. Had we contested in alliance with the United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) we could have inflicted heavier loss on the UNP," said the press release.
