Hundred of women, Tamils, Sinhalese and Muslims Wednesday participated in a silent march for solidarity and peace organized by the Women And Children Care Organization (WACCO) condemning war and demanding peace. Participants carried placards urging the government and others to work for the success of finding lasting peace in the country, sources said

The march, which commenced near the North East Provincial Governor's Office located in Orr's Hill, a suburb in Trincomalee town, went through the Inner Harbor Road, Post Office and Beach Road towards the Trincomalee district secretariat located inside the Fort Frederick to hand over a memorandum to the Government Agent. Religious leaders of all four faiths led the march, sources said.

However, the police and military officials stopped the march from entering the Fort Frederick for security reason. The Gajaba Regiment of the Sri Lanka Army is also located inside the Fort Frederick with the historic Koneswaram Temple, sources said.

Mr.K.G.Leelananda, Government Agent, on receipt of information came out of Fort Frederick to the site where four religious leaders were waiting for him with the participants of the march. He spoke with the religious leaders and WACCO officials, sources said.

Rev.Nandaretna Thera of Mahadiulwewa Bodhirama Vihare, Sivasiri Sutharsanam Sarma, Rev.Fr.B.G.David and Moulavi Ismail Nauber jointly handed over a memorandum addressed to Sri Lanka's President to Mr.Leelananda.

The memorandum stressed the urgent need of establishing permanent peace in the country, sources said.

Mr.Leelananda said he would be sending the memorandum to the President immediately.
