UNICEF funded Health Centre opens in Faizal Nagar

Gramothaya Health Centre (GHC) constructed at a cost 4.2 million rupees in Faizal Nagar, in Kinniya division in Trincomalee district, was handed over to the community of the area at an event held Saturday morning. The Health Centre includes staff quarters and a midwife who is expected to assume in the month of June this year. The GHC is a part of the tsunami reconstruction programme funded by the UNICEF and constructed by the United Nations Office For Project Service (UNOPS).
A child resident of the village declared the GHC open by cutting the ribbon, and a resident beneficiary unveiled the name board symbolizing the ownership of the Health Center belongs to the village residents. Ms Gabriela Elroy, UNICEF Trincomalee head, said the Medical Officer of Health and the Deputy Provincial Director of Health Services (DPDHS) will take the managerial responsibilities for the Center. Only if the Center can ensure that all pregnant women go to clinics and that all children are sent for immunization, we can be satisfied that the objective of the Center in filling the primary health care needs of the community have been met, said Ms Elroy. Dr.E.G.Gnanagunalan, DPDHS promised to appoint a midwife soon in the newly opened center, to look after the health activities. Medical clinics are expected to commence in the center from this month. Mr.M.M.Mubarak, Kinniya Divisional Secretary, Mr.J.Jeyamaran, District Engineer of the UNOPS in Trincomalee, Dr.Nazeer, Kinniya District medical Officer and Mr. Michael Ryan of UNOPS participated in the event. Dr.M.M.Sameem, MOH in Kinniya made the welcome address.
