Trader shot dead in Vadamaradchy

Thevarajah Mariyathas, 26, a trader from Vadamaradchy, Point Pedro was shot dead at 4.40 p.m. Saturday by unknown gunmen who arrived in two motorbikes and fired at the the local business establishment owned by the deceased, sources in Jaffna said. Mariyathas's father was also seriously injured during the shooting. The killing took place in Manal Olungai (Sand Lane), in Munai area Vadamaradchy.
Injured father, K. Thevarajah, 58, was first taken to the Manthikai General Hospital and later transferred to Jaffna Teaching Hospital in serious condition, hospital sources said. Relatives of Mariyathas, who took the body to the Manthikai Hospital refused to allow the body to be taken to the mortuary and have taken the body back to their home, Manthikai hospital sources said. Relatives accuse the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers stationed in Munai as responsible for the killing.
