Rough weather in Colombo

The Sri Lankan capital, Colombo, and its suburbs experienced heavy showers with winds upto 50 km per hour this morning, said meteorological officials in the city. They said that 113.3 mm of rain was measured between 6.00 a.m. and 9.00 p.m.

"We haven't had so much rainfall within a short time span in recent times", they added.

Two cars were damaged when a tree fell at Horton Place in the city due to high winds. Many families living in low lying areas had to move due to floods.

"Arrangements are being made to distribute food rations to them", said local government officials.

Meanwhile two fishermen are reported missing in the seas off Panandura, south of Colombo, after their boat collided with a rock, said sources.

They said that six other fishing boats along with 20 people are also reported missing.
