Youth shot dead in Jaffna

Unknown gunmen shot dead a 27-year old youth in Koyathottam area near Jaffna town at 4 p.m. Tuesday, sources in Jaffna said. Balachandran Reginald Rosan from 1st Cross street was visiting his grandmother's house located in Puthu Veethi, Koyathottam, when the gunmen entered the residence and shot him in close range, sources added.

His body with four gunshot wounds has been taken to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital for postmortem examinations, hospital sources said.

Local residents expressed shock at the killing which occured during a period when the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) was strengthening security measures around key areas in Jaffna.

SLA is constructing speed breakers in several points in key roads around Jaffna town. Checks on vehicles and pedestrians also have been increased in the past several days, sources said.
