New left political group to be inaugurated in Colombo

A new political formation in the south is to be inaugurated on Thursday with the name "Socialist Peoples' Alliance" (SPA). The Lanka Sama Samaja Party (LSSP), Sri Lanka Communist Party (SLCP), Sri Lanka Peoples Party (SLPP), National Liberation Peoples Party (DVPP) and Democratic Leftist Front (DLF) have joined in the new political formation, political sources said.
The introduction event is to be held on Thursday evening at Colombo Library auditorium. The same day delegates of the constituent parties of the new political group would hold a seminar on the topic " Peace, Democracy and Social Development", sources said. Professor Tissa Vitharana, Minister and LSSP leader, Mr.D.E.W.Gunasekara, Minister and General Secretary of the SLCP, veteran trade union leader Mr.Vasudeva Nanayakara and several politicians, parliamentarians and provincial and local councilors with left leanings in southern political parties are expected to participate in the inaugural event, sources in Colombo said.
