Trincomalee UC to function from Thursday

Elected administration of the Trincomalee Urban Council is to function from Thursday morning with Mr.Shanmugarajah Gowrimuhunthan and Mr. Kanthasamy Selvarajah of the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kadchchi (ITAK) taking oaths as Chairman and Vice-Chairman respectively, local government sources in Trincomalee said.

The ITAK captured ten of the twelve members of the Trincomalee UC at the election held on March 30. The rest two seats have gone to the sole Independent Group. Two other political parties, Eelam Peoples Democratic Party (EPDP) and Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) did not quality to get a seat as they failed to obtain one fifth of the total votes polled.

The ITAK has appointed Mr. Gowrimuhunthan and Mr.Selvarajah for the posts of Chairman and Vice-Chairman as they received the first and second highest preferential votes. Eight other members of the ITAK are: Messrs; Kandiah Thurairasa, J.Pulendraraj, P.Muniandy, S.Arulselvam, T.Karikalan, R.N.Varathan, A.H.Sahul Hameed and Ms Kanmany Ammal Ratnavadivel.

The two seats of the Independent group went to two Muslim candidates, Mr. Sultan Farook and Mr. Nahoor Noor Mohamed, who obtained highest preferential votes.
