UC Chairman wants rule of law to prevail in Trinco town

"Trincomalee Urban Council would take every step to strengthen the rule of law as a critical pre-rquisite to promote social and political order within our local administrative area. Local Government Ordinance will be the basis for this focus," said Mr. S.Gowrimuhunthan, Chairman of the Trincomalee UC in his first address to the people and ratepayers of the east port town Thursday morning soon after he took over of the administration, sources said.

"We will seek the assistance of the international community which has been stressing the importance of democratic governance and devolution of power, if the elected administration encounters any form of intimidation or coercion," added Mr. Gowrimuhunthan. Mr. Gowrimuhunthan further said: "We seek constructive contribution of the law enforcement authorities and the judiciary for implementing development projects for the betterment of the ratepayers and people. We also seek their help to safeguard the assets and properties of the UC." The administrative machinery of the North East Provincial Council (NEPC) and District Administration are located within the administrative area of the Trincomalee UC. The Trincomalee harbor and other economic development
projects are also located within the UC administrative limit. These contribute to the development and growth of the local council administration, said Mr. Gowrimuhunthan.  Large number of people attended the oath taking event in Trinco Town Hall.
