India urged to intervene

The Eelam Peoples Revolutionary Liberation Front (EPRLF) has asked for Indian mediation to resolve the ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka. A statement issued by Suresh Premachandran, General Secretary, EPRLF, states that India has a moral obligation to intervene in resolving the conflict because of its long involvement.

The statement urges Indian Prime Minister A. B. Vajpayee to take up the subject while he is in Colombo for the South Asian Association for Regional Co-operation (SAARC) summit due to be held on the last three days in July.

The present Indian coalition government with its sizeable and vocal Tamil parties has come under increasing pressure to intervene in the conflict.
