UPFA, SLMC supporters clash, grenade lobbed in Oddamavady

The house of a Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) supporter and a former Provincial Council member, Sinnalebbe Mohammed Hanifa, was attacked with grenade Tuesday early morning around 3:30 a.m., Valaichenai Police said. A quarrel between SLMC supporters and the ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Muslim supporters engaged in local election campaign, ended in clash where the chief candidate of the UPFA alliance, M.H. Lebbe Hajjiar and two others were wounded Monday evening.
S. M. Thafeek, M. Usanar, were the other two who were wounded in the clash on Monday. No one was wouded in the grenade attack on SLMC supporter's house Tuesday morning. Four family members, including children, were at home when the grenade exploded at the house located in Oddamavay, 3rd ward. The house was damaged in the attack. Valaichenai Police is conducting investigations into the incident. Local elections to forty five local government authorities in the six districts of Jaffna, Mullaithivu, Killinochchi, Mannar, Vavuniya and Batticaloa, have been postponed by the Sri Lankan Commissioner of Elections till September 30.
