LTTE member killed

A member of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), identified as 'Murugan', was shot dead by the Special Task Force (STF) at Tirukovil, 70 km south of Batticaloa, yesterday around 3:30 p.m., said police sources in Batticaloa.

The STF of the Tirukovil camp, which was on a routine patrol killed him when he tried open fire, STF sources are reported to have said.

Murugan had a grenade, a firearm and a cyanide capsule on his person, they added.

His body was handed over to the Akkaraipattu District Hospital where an autopsy was done by Dr. Chitra Devarajah. It was then given to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to be handed over to the LTTE, said sources.
