Son shot dead, father injured in Batticaloa

Armed men, carrying T56 assault rifles shot and killed, Milred Roy Weld, 39, and seriously wounded his father Milred Weld, 64, at around 9 p.m., Wednesday, while the two were resting after taking dinner at their home on Semakkalai Road in Jeyanthipuram, 1.5 km north of Batticaloa town, police sources said. Local residents alleged that the attackers were soldiers of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) from Jeyanthipuram camp. The Weld family belongs to the Burgher community in Batticaloa.

Roy Weld's body has been taken to Batticaloa teaching hospital for postmortem examinations.

Residents said that the two were attacked by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers in their home after they came out of their house to inquire into the sound of gun fire from the close by Jeyanthipram army camp,

Most members of the Burgher community in Batticaloa are carpenters by profession.
