Youth shot dead, civilian hacked to death in Eravur

An unidentified youth of estimated age 20, was shot dead by unknown gunmen on Uppodai Road in Vantharumoolai, Batticaloa on Friday at 8:30 p.m., police sources said. A green coloured hand-grenade was found in his possession, Eravur police said.
The youth's body has been taken to Eravur hospital mortuary for identification. In a separate incident, Savuntharan Chandrakumar, 23, a mason, was hacked to death at Iyankernisaspuram, Batticaloa, at 10:40 p.m. on Friday, Eravur police sources said. Chandrakumar had gone to the nearby local shop at Iyankerni School Road to buy provisions, when five unidentified persons who arrived at the shop, coaxed him out of the shop, and hacked him to death before escaping. Chandrakumar'svbody has been handed over to his relatives after postmortem examinations, hospital sources said. Eravur police is investigating into both killings. Vantharumoolai is located 14 km north of Batticaloa Town, and Iyankernisaspuram is located 13 km northeast of Batticaloa Town.
