More than 100 families from Thampiluvil south and west, demonstrated in front of the Thirukkovil local authority office from 9:00 a.m. for two hours Wednesday, demanding that their names be added to the list of Tsunami victims eligible to receive Tsunami-disaster relief, said Batticaloa sources. The demonstrators allege that their names were deliberately omitted from the Tsunami victim list by the local authorities when the orignal list was prepared for the disaster relief programme, sources said.
The functioning of the local authority office was temporarily disrupted during the morning as a result of the protest, said sources. At the end of the demonstration, the protesters submitted a memorandum to the local authority-head appealing for Tsunami aid. Meanwhile, beginning of this week, the Kalmunai Tsunami-affected residents living in temporary shelters, demonstrated in front of the Kalmunai local authority office condemning the authorities for not providing them with permanent housing, Kalmunai sources said. Thirukkovil and Kalmunai are located 69 km and 37 km of Batticaloa town.
