Jaffna traders list losses

A list detailing the items that were lost with the sunken ship, Princes Kash, has been despatched to the Sri Lankan President, Chandrika Kumaratunga, opposition leader Ranil Wikramasinghe and various Tamil parliamentarians, said sources.

The list, complied by the Jaffna traders association, says that the total loss amounts to Rs. 296,978,919.

It is learnt from a representative of the fishermen's' union of Vadamaratchi North that the organisation lost around Rs.1.8 million worth of materials when the ship was bombed by the Sri Lankan Air Force (SLAF).

The bulk of this material had been funded by donations from the international charity, CARE, while the remainder had been acquired through the union's own collection (Rs. 300,000) and a loan (Rs. 200,000) from the Peoples' bank.

The Traders Association claims that 12 traders in Vadamaratchi have lost Rs. 20 million worth of goods. The Association also denied that it had anything to do with some of the slogans at Wednesday's protest by 600 people, which severely condemned the government's bombing of the ship.
