Large scale projects cut - President

Sri Lankan President, Chandrika Kumaratunga, has ordered her ministers not to initiate any large-scale development projects said sources. The President made this declaration at a cabinet meeting held on Wednesday August 19, they said.

She further urged the ministers to avoid seeking increased allocations of funds for such schemes, and said that any such request will undoubtedly be turned down.

She is reported to have stated that the country is facing a server economic crisis, and "even under such a difficult situation, we have to allocate huge amounts for the conduct of war."

"As a result we are not in a position to engage in any large projects," she reportedly said.
