Most Jaffna food never arrived

Evidence has newly emerged that most of last year's food consignments originally destined for Jaffna had never reached the shores of the peninsula.

Authorities are reportedly demanding the Secretary of the Ministry of Shipping to come up with satisfactory explanations as to how the consignments, in the order of around 310 million rupees, went missing.

The Secretary has reportedly been ordered to conduct an inquiry into the missing materials and to submit a report on the disappearance of stock allocated for GA of Jaffna between 10 April 1997 and 31 December 1997.

The goods are said to include 10,974 metric ton of rice, 2150 metric ton of sugar, 1310 metric ton of red-lentils and 75 metric ton of dehydrated milk-powder.
