Bodies of two women washed ashore along 29th Road of Ward No: 2 in Pungudutivu in Jaffna district were handed over to the mortuary of the Jaffna Teaching Hospital on Monday around 9.30 p.m.
Civil authorities said that these two bodies belonged to Tamil civilians drowned in mid sea while fleeing from Talaimannar in Mannar district to seek refuge in Tamilnadu. The Village level officer (Grama Niladhari- GN) of the area handed over these bodies to the hospital following the refusal of the Kayts Police. It is alleged that Police had threatened the GN carry out their order or face arrest. In the last few days several residents of Mannar and Trincomalee were reportedly leaving to Tamilnadu by boats from Mannar coast due to volatile situation in the North East following fresh fight broke out between the Sri Lanka Army and LTTE. Some of these civilians are reportedly drowned when their boats capsized while fleeing.
