US Congressman presses for special envoy to Sri Lanka[TamilNet, Saturday, 23 September 2006, 01:03 GMT]Congressman for the 12th district in New Jersey, Rep. Rush Holt, urged US Secretary of State Rice to appoint a special envoy to emphasize US's committment to peace in Sri Lanka and to include in the envoy's mandate "efforts to increase monitoring of human rights violations," in a letter sent Thursday.
The letter also pointed to the recent investigation by the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) on the murder of 17 aid workers, and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights statement on the "urgent need for the international community to monitor the unfolding human rights situation."
