SLA forces Union college to relocate

Arrangements are underway to move educational activities of Tellipalai Union College in private buildings in Chunnakam, Malakam and Maruthanamadam areas following the refusal of the SLA to allow the college to function in its own premises which fell into the newly extended High Security Zone (HSZ) of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) in Jaffna, sources from Jaffna said.

Tellipalai Union College, renovated at large cost after the Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of Sri Lanka and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) was signed, has been declared out of bounds for the staff and students when clashes broke out between the SLA and the LTTE on August 11.

The principal of Tellipalai Union College has announced that the institution will begin to function on Wednesday in private buildings in Mallakam, Chunakam and Maruthanamadam.

Meanwhile, after the four-week boycott of schools organised by the Student Union Federation was called off, schools in the peninsula began functioning again Monday.

However, schools in Kachai, Mirusuvil and Varany in Thenmaradchi region have not reopened for fear of artillery fire and rocket attacks, said Thenmardchi residents.

Schools in Alvai and Kachai occupied by Internaly Displaced People (IDP) show no sign of opening in the near future, education officials said.
