Plantation Tamil worker strike continues for seventh day

Plantation Tamil workers in the upcountry districts struck work Monday for the seventh day demanding that their daily wage increased to Rs. 300. They have been holding demonstrations, sit-in-protests in upcountry towns and villages irrespective trade union differences, Trade Union (TU) sources said.
Traders have shut down their shops and other business establishments expressing their solidarity with estate workers. Meanwhile, trade union leaders and employers' federation representatives at the Labour Ministry are to hold a discussion Monday evening with Minister Athauda Seneviratne, union officials said. Tamil workers express hope that an amicable settlement in the increase of their daily wage will be reached during the discussion.
