The main opposition United National Party (UNP) has appealed to President Mahinda Rajapakse not to jeopardize the smooth implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the UNP and the Sri
Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), main constituent of the United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) government, by making irresponsible statements, media sources in Colombo said.
Dr.Jayalath Jayawardene, UNP parliamentarian in an interview with a private electronic media Tuesday evening deplored the statement made by Mr.Mahinda Rajapakse that he has been "surrounded by a cluster of UNP parliamentarians" and as such there is no need for him to call for a snap general election. "We hope that Mr.Rajapakse would honor the MoU signed by
the two main political parties to resolve six identified issues giving top priority to solving the ethnic conflict," Dr.Jayawardene added.
