Paramilitary office attacked in Batticaloa

Armed men launched an attack on the office of paramilitary Karuna Group, located at Kallady, inside the High Security area of Sri Lanka Army at 11:20 p.m. Wednesday. Reports said one paramilitary personnel was killed and eight others injured. The attack lasted for more than an hour damaging the office. Kallady is located 3 km south of Batticaloa town.

The injured were admitted to Batticaloa Teaching hospital. On Tuesday, armed men attacked two paramilitary installations in Valaichenai, north of Batticaloa. The attackers bombed and flattened one of the two houses, killing all paramilitary personnel inside it, Police sources said. 12 Karuna Group personnel were killed Tuesday, according to informed ex-militant sources in Batticaloa. Castro, a key figure in Karuna Group, was killed in a similar attack made on the Group's Kalmunai office last month. Sri Lanka Army claimed it had killed 4 Liberation Tigers cadres in Valaichenai, after the attack on paramilitary installations. The Tigers said four political cadres were shot dead by the SLA at Kannakipuram in Valaichenai and had contacted the ICRC to acquire the dead bodies of their cadres. Karuna Group has been continuously engaged in the abduction of children and killings in the eastern province, alleged sources in Batticaloa.
