Sixteen parliamentarians of the main opposition United National Party (UNP) are to join the United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) government, media reports in Colombo said Tuesday evening quoting a senior Sri Lankan Minister D.Jayaraetne, the general secretary of the Peoples Alliance (PA), a constituent of the UPFA government.
Hence a cabinet reshuffle in the next few days is imminent to accommodate some of the UNP members, political sources said. Meanwhile, Rajitha Senaratne, one of the UNP parliamentarians who are billed to cross over to the government side also told media that a group of UNP MPs were to join the government including a key member. He charged that "reform proposals" submitted to the UNP hierarchy have been ignored and appointments to the key posts in the party have been made in a "dictatorial way," prompting the dissident team of MPs to join the UPFA government.
