"We will gather people and agitate on the streets against the government if it takes in United National Party (UNP) parliamentarians who are against 'Mahintha Chinthanaya,' and this may even lead to the downfall of the government," Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) parliamentarian for Gampaha district, Vijith Hearath said, commenting on the reported likely cross-over of 18 UNP parliamentarians to the government, political sources in Colombo said.
"We extend our support to the government because the security of the nation is in danger but the government should not count this as a weakness of our party," the MP said. "We do not oppose the government taking in UNP parliamentarians but we do oppose taking in MPs who are against 'Mahintha Chinthanaya'. People like Karu Jayasuriya and G. L. Pieris, who support privatisation will try to privatize public concerns after joining the government, against the very grain of 'Mahintha Chinthanaya," Mr. Herath said. "Though we are not in the government we lend support to it in all matters. We have voted and helped passing bills of the government even at times when some of its own ministers were absent during voting," he said.
