Youth arrested for purchasing Bananas

Two youths who bought a large quantity of bananas at the Eravur market this morning were arrested by the Sri Lankan Police. The youth, according to the Police, were suspected of purchasing the bananas for an LTTE function in the hinterland to commemorate Thileepan.

They said that the Sri Lankan security forces in Batticaloa were on a general alert in connection with the Thileepan week and hence they were on the look out for LTTE sympathisers who buy colour paper, cloth, fruits etc.,. in large quantities for the functions.

The Sri Lankan security forces cancelled the ferries across the lagoon to the hinterland.

Eravur is about 16 kilometers north of Batticaloa.
