Civilian shot dead in Eravur

An unidentified armed person, shot dead a family man at his mother's house at Aiyankerni in Earavur police division in Batticaloa, Saturday around 8:10 p.m, Eravur police said.

The victim was identified as Sahathevan Vijayakumar, 38, a father of two children and a daily labourer from Nagathambiran Kovil road in Aiyankerni.

Vijayakumar, who used to spend the nights at his mother's house, was shot to death when he came out to close the gate of the compound, by the killer who was waiting for him.

Eravur police recovered the dead body on Sunday morning and handed it over to Eravur hospital where inquest into death was conducted.

The dead body was then given to relatives.

Eravur police are conducting further investigation of the killing.

Aiyankerny is located 17 km northeast of Batticaloa town.
