Civilians from Valaichchenai arrested in Hatton

Nine Tamil civilians from Valaichchenai in Batticaloa district in the eastern province were arrested by the Sri Lanka security forces in a cordon and search operation conducted in Hatton in Nuwara Eliya district in the central province Saturday morning, sources said.



Police said they were taken into custody and detained in Hatton police station as they did not possess national identity cards and also failed to provide valid reason for their stay in Hatton.

Meanwhile, 24 Tamil civilians arrested in several search operations conducted in Hatton till Friday morning were produced in Magistrate Court Friday and remanded for fourteen days on an application made by the police.

Majority of them are natives of northeast province and a few are residents of Hatton, sources said.
