Relative of murdered undergrad shot dead in Jaffna

More than ten unidentified armed men forcibly entered the house of a young man in Thavalai, Varani in Thenmaradchy Friday around 1:15 a.m and shot him dead, according to a statement given by his parents to Kodikamam police. The
victim had tried to escape into the kitchen where he was sprayed with AK-47 fire by the killers who pursued him.
The victim was identified as Velupillai Sivakumar, 27, a daily labourer. Sivakumar had told his parents that he had been threatened with death by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) and had planned to seek safety with his relatives in Jaffna town Friday morning to escape from Varani SLA. Kodikamam police recovered the body Friday evening and handed it to Jaffna Teaching Hospita, There were more than ten gunshot wounds on Sivakumar's body, hospital sources said. Sivakumar is a relative of the Jaffna University student who was shot dead in Varani recently, his parents said.
