UNP demands to know JVP, JHU's position on SLFP-LTTE deal

The main opposition United national Party (UNP) Monday requested the Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU), all monks' party and Sinhala nationalist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) to state their stand on the allegation leveled by ousted ministers Mangala Samaraweera and Sripathi Sooriyarachchi that some politicians of ruling Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) had struck a secret deal with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) before the last presidential election.

Tilak Karunaratne, UNP treasurer at a press briefing held Monday asked these two Sinhala nationalist parties to break their silence on the secret deal with the LTTE.

Mr. Karunaratne said his party would extend its support in parliament when sacked ministers table a motion requesting the Speaker to appoint a select committee to inquire into the allegation of the secret deal with the LTTE.

He reminded that the JHU and JVP shouted on election platforms during the last presidential election that the UNP was having a secret deal with the LTTE. Now Sri Lankans are aware that the SLFP had entered into a secret deal with the LTTE to win the presidential election and not the UNP.
