Unidentified persons triggered a claymore device Sunday around 10:00 a.m at Kokkaddichcholai in Batticaloa, killing three Special Task Force (STF) troopers and injuring four. The injured troopers were rushed to Batticaloa Teaching hospital. The STF took over the bodies of the troopers killed in the attack.
The claymore attack was carried out on STF troopers travelling in a tractor to Batticaloa from Kokkaddichcholai Sunday morning. Kokkaddichcholai was recently occupied by the Sri Lanka Armed forces after the recent offensives against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in the LTTE held territory in Batticaloa district. SLA cordoned off, and searched the area immediately after the attack. Meanwhile, Ka'luvaagnchikudi police claimed that an LTTE member was killed in an exchange of gunfire between STF and LTTE Sunday around 4:00 a.m at Poaratheevu in Ka'luvaagnchikudi police division, Batticaloa. The STF recovered a T56 type rifle and magazine from the killed LTTE member, according to the Police. T. Yogarajah, of Poaratheevu was identified as the LTTE member killed. The victim's body is kept at Ka'luvaagnchikudi hospital. STF claimed that an LTTE member was killed in STF retaliation when LTTE attacked one of their units Sunday early morning.
