Three fishermen detained

Three fishermen from the south-eastern coast of the Jaffna peninsula who set out to sea on Thursday (October 22) have been arrested and detained by the Sri Lankan Navy according to their relatives.

The three fishermen set out to sea in the early hours of the morning on Thursday and did not return to the coast yesterday as expected.

Their relatives who were alarmed, contacted the Sri Lankan Army and Navy at Pt.Pedro with details of the missing fishermen. The SLA confirmed that the men were alive and in their custody.

Relatives said that the three men were fishing according to the stringent regulations imposed by the SLA on fishing and that they could not see any reason why they had to be arrested.
