S.Sree Gajan, the Tamil journalist who was arrested on July 6 by the Terrorism Investigation Department (TID), a special unit established in May this year by the Sri Lankan government, was released on bail today by the Colombo magistrate. The journalist's lawyer Joseph Charles, instructed by Ms.Gowri Shankar, appeared for him.
The court imposed a bail of two thousand rupees. Legal sources said that the fundamental rights case filed by Sree Gajan while he was in detention under the draconian Prevention of Terrorism Act will be taken up for hearing in Sri Lanka's supreme court on October 2. Sree Gajan was working as journalist with the Virakesari, the Tamil daily with the largest circulation in Sri Lanka. The TID arrested him on suspicion that he had links with the Liberation Tigers.
