Travel to Neduntheevu banned for third day

With travel ban to and from Neduntheevu imposed by the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) continuing for the third day after the attack by the Sea Tigers on the SLN camp, relatives of Neduntheevu residents in Jaffna and the several hundred Neduntheevu residents stranded in Jaffna have made appeals to the Sri Lanka Government authorities to inform the status of the civilians trapped in the islet, civil society sources in Jaffna said.

With the Government of Agent of Jaffna, Mr K Ganesh, currently out of the district, no information on the 7,000 civilians in the islet under the control of the SLN has been made available to the public, sources added.

Two telephone land-lines to the islet were not functional after the attack, sources said.

Non-Government Organizations expressed concern at the lack of efforts by the Government Authorities, and the Jaffna district command of Sri Lanka Security forces to address the woes of residents trapped in Neduntheevu, sources in Jaffna said.

No boats were allowed to travel between Ku'rkkadduvaan Jetty in Mandaitheevu and Neduntheevu islets by the SLN for the third day and hundreds of passengers who went to the jetty were turned back by the SLN soldiers, according to civil society sources.
