Case dismissed after long detention

Rajenthiran Jeyenthiran, a school boy of St. Michals College in Batticaloa who was arrested under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) was released on Friday after being held in detention for 30 months.
The high court judge, Mr. A.N.Ramachandran dismissed the case and ordered the boy's release when the case was taken up for hearing on Friday. Defence attorney, Mr. Premnath asked for the release of Rajenthiran Jeyenthiran on grounds that the police officer Mr. Ashoka Vijeyatilake, the plaintiff, had failed to appear in the courts on 9 occasions and that the boy was a 17 year old student when he was arrested. Rajenthiran Jeyenthiran was arrested on April 30 1996 on suspicion that he was involved in blasting three transformers in Batticaloa.
