Eight Tamils arrested in Munthal, Udappu

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) and police in a combined cordon and search operation conducted at Munthal and Udappu, Tamil villages in the Chilaw (Chilaapam) district in northwestern province Thursday morning, arrested eight Tamil civilians, all natives of Trincomalee and Thampalakaamam, sources in Chilaw said.

Police said they were taken into custody as they failed to produce valid reason for their stay in the location and did not have the national identity cards with them.

However, four of the eight suspects were released after preliminary inquiry.

Other four are being detained in the Chilaw police station and are being interrogated by the Terrorist Intelligence Unit, Police said.
