Five persons arrested over electricity pylon blast at Wellampitya

Sri Lanka police arrested five Tamils Tuesday morning in connection with a blast of an electricity pylon carrying high-voltage electric cables at Oorugodawatte in Wellampitya police division along Colombo-Avissawella road. The pylon had been supplying electricity from Kelanitisaa to Biyagama and located in the high security zone, police sources said.

Police sources said about 500 kg of explosives had been used to blast the pylon. A part of the pylon had been damaged.

Of the five suspects, two had been working as watchers of an estate close to the site where the blast took place. All of them are said to be Tamils, majority of them are from upcountry, sources said.
