Vegetable business collapses in Mannaar
[TamilNet, Wednesday, 13 June 2007, 11:15 GMT]
Traders engaged in selling vegetables in Mannaar town have closed their businesses due to the restriction imposed by the Sri Lanka Army on lorries transporting food stuffs from the south of the country to Mannaar town. Lorries transporting produce from Mannaar to Sri Lanka's south and vegetables from Dambulla to Mannaar are not allowed to proceed beyond Mathawachchiya in the north central province, business sources said.
Lorries transporting produce from Dambulla are instructed to unload their stock at Mathawachchiya and to be transported in another lorry to Mannaar. Likewise lorries taking the produce from Mannaar to the south are also asked to unload their stock at Mathawachchiya. This has caused heavy expenditure to traders. Hence the closure of vegetable shops in Mannaar town. Over one hundred vegetable traders have closed their shops. All vegetable shops in Mannaar modern market have been closed since Tuesday, civil sources said.
