Sporadic clashes in Batticaloa

Five Sri Lankan Army (SLA) Soldiers were wounded and one civilian was killed in two separate incidents in the eastern Batticaloa district today said sources there.
Three SLA soldiers were wounded when suspected members of the Liberation Tigers lobbed a grenade on an army foot patrol in Kaluwanchikuddy, about thirty kilometres south of Batticaloa town, this morning around 11.45. A 30 year old woman identified as Kalavathy Subramanium was killed in the SLA's retaliatory fire following the attack. The wounded SLA soldiers are P.P.S.Rajapakse (22), C.K.Veeraperume (27) and K.J.Sarathchandra (28). Meanwhile two SLA soldiers riding a motorcycle, escorting an army convoy, were wounded when they were attacked by the Liberation Tigers in Morakoddanchenai in the Batticaloa district around 1.15 p.m. The attack took place about 200 meters from the Morakoddanchenai SLA camp.
