CID summons UNP parliamentarian for inquiry

Dr.Jayalath Jayawardene, parliamentarian of the main opposition United National Party (UNP) representing the Gampaha district in western province was summoned by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Police to its office Friday morning to record his statement. Dr.Jayalath Jayawardene Thursday morning said parliament submitting a privilege motion that he had received a written letter from the CID Director in this regard without giving any reason, sources said.

Jayawardene told the Speaker that the CID has breached his parliamentary privilege by summoning him to its office on the day when the parliament is meeting.

He requested the Speaker to take action to ensure police does not breach his privilege.

Meanwhile, a no-confidence motion against another UNP parliamentarian Mr.Lakshman Seneviratne was handed over to the Speaker Thursday.

Seventy-eight ruling party parliamentarians have signed the no-confidence stating that Mr.Lakshman Seneviratne had made irresponsible statement in parliament in connection with the eviction of Tamils from Colombo lodges de-moralizing the government armed forces, parliamentary sources said.
