[TamilNet, Wednesday, 04 November 1998, 15:57 GMT]
The Sri Lanka Army (SLA) announced today that the Jaffna Lagoon would become a 'no-go' zone said sources in Jaffna. The ban will come into effect from 5 a.m. tomorrow, November 5, they said. Jaffna fishermen would be severely affected they said.
A representative of a Jaffna fishermen's association, commenting on the latest regulation, said the ban on fishing will make the living condition much worse for fishermen who have already been finding life difficult due to earlier fishing restrictions in place on the peninsula. He said the matter has been brought to the notice of the Tamil political parties. He also said that the fishermen have lodged a protest with the SLA. Sources said the fishermen are also planning to stage a demonstration against the ban. The ban on fishing comes 3 three days after the SLA stipulated new travel restrictions into Palai, an area south of Jaffna town.
